In sports, there are many people who work behind the scenes to get things done. Each of these individuals are a part of the team and play a vital role in the organization’s success. Football has many different staff members such as ball boys, water boys, and people who simply make sure the coach does not get run over by someone on the sidelines.
It is baseball season and like football and other sports, they have their key staff members as well. Bat boys are no different. They are often the heroes of the game that you do not hear about. They get players bats after each at-bat. When the umpires need new baseballs, they run them out to them. These guys make sure that each players helmet and bat is in the spot it needs to be so they do not have to find it when it is their time to bat. They are a huge part of the team and go un-noticed the majority of the time.
Batboys are also servants. They do anything and everything possible to make their team better.
The mother of James and John, in Matthew 20, approached Jesus wanting her sons to sit at the right and left the hand of Jesus. The other disciples had heard about this and were greatly upset. They had actually thought that they were granted what their mother had requested. Instead, Jesus told them all that if they wanted to desire greatness then they need to become servants. Real ministry is done for the benefit of others, not for the one who is doing the ministry.
Being Christlike involves us being servants to others. Jesus came to earth to serve and not to be served.
Batboys serve all of the players on the team. The players have the ability to do the jobs themselves but the batboys help ease some of the responsibilities. As Christians, we have the opportunity to serve others each day. They may not want our services or even ask for it but offering up ways to help others is what we are called to do.
Take a moment and glance over your church bulletin at the sick list. Browse your social media feeds and see people who are asking for prayers. Do you see anyone moving? Do you see anyone who is going on vacation and needs a house sitter? Do you see anyone needing anything? They may not even be asking but the need is there. Reach out to someone and ask how you can be of service to them.
